Why Early Earth Did Not Freeze

Sun Jan 25 2026 · en

In the early Archean, the Sun was fainter than today. Yet Earth maintained liquid water.

The basic energy balance can be written as:

(1α)S=4σT4(1 - \alpha) S = 4 \sigma T^4

where
α\alpha is the planetary albedo,
SS the solar constant,
and σ\sigma the Stefan–Boltzmann constant.

This imbalance implies the presence of greenhouse gases.
